- The problem is that "fractal" image compression algorithms are seldom
- symmetrical: They take MUCH longer to compress than decompress! In fact,
- there's an old joke that the best "fractal" compression algorithm is the
- "graduate student in a closet" routine."

- The other problem is that there are other algorithms available that are
- faster, compress tighter, and are less lossy. One that looks promising is
- "wavelet compression. Wavelet theory seems to be taking the scientific
- communitty by storm, not unlike Chaos theory and Catastrophy Theory a few
- years ago....
